Thomas Hicken was born on 15 June 1826, in Burton on the Wolds, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom, his father, Thomas Hicken, was 53 and his mother, Ann Ward, was 34. He married Catherine Fewkes on 30 June 1845, in Whitwick, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 1 daughter. He lived in Whitwick, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom in 1841 and Provo, Utah, Utah, United States in 1860. He registered for military service in 1866. He died on 2 March 1915, in Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States, at the age of 88, and was buried in Heber City Cemetery, Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States.

He was baptized February 15, 1845 by Thomas Field and ordained a Priest and subsequently an Elder by Crandell Dunn. He presided over the Whitwick branch until 1851 when he immigrated to America. He was ordained a Seventy in 1855 by Henry Rodger at Provo, Utah, in which place he lived for seven or eight years. In the spring of 1860, he came to Heber City. He was ordained a High Priest August 19, 1861, by Elisha Averett, Sr. In 1863, he labored in Summit and Morgan countries advocating the Word of Wisdom. He was ordained a Patriarch November 7, 1880, by Daniel H. Wells.
