Joseph Stacy Murdock was born on 26 June 1822, in Hamilton, Madison, New York, United States, his father, Joseph Murdock, was 38 and his mother, Sally Stacy, was 34. He married Eunice Sweet on 26 June 1842, in Albany, Albany, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. He lived in West Point, Davis, Utah, United States in 1870 and Monroe, Platte, Nebraska, United States in 1880. He registered for military service in 1865. He died on 15 February 1899, in Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States, at the age of 76, and was buried in Heber City Cemetery, Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States.

In 1849 he was called by Brigham Young to go back to Green River to assist Saints coming to Zion. He was unable to have children with his wife Eunice Sweet and with her permission he married Eliza Clark in 1852, Jane Sharp and Elizabeth Hunt in 1854 and in 1858 he married Pernette, a Piute Indian girl he had bought along with her brother. They had been captured by the Utes and were going to be put to death. In 1856 he was called to take his family and assist in settling Carson Valley. November 15, 1860, he was ordained a Bishop by Brigham Young and was sent to preside over the people locating in Wasatch County being the first Bishop in Heber. In the days of the Black Hawk War, he took a leading row in settling the Indian uprising. When the Wasatch Stake was organized, he was made the President of the High Council and served in this office until his death.
