John Carlile was born on 25 May 1825, in Misson, Nottinghamshire, England, United Kingdom, his father, Robert Carlile, was 36 and his mother, Christiana Spouncer, was 28. He married Elizabeth Williamson on 21 January 1844, in Misson, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 5 daughters. He died on 16 September 1859, in Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States, at the age of 34, and was buried in Heber City Cemetery, Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States.

In 1859 he left his family in Spanish Fork, while he came to Heber to put in crops. While in Heber he ran out of food, so he decided to return for more food. The Provo River was very high, he got into the water and was nearly drown. He held onto a bush until help came to him. The horse he was riding kicked him. He had a hard time to get home. July 24, 1859 he moved his family to Heber. He lived until September 16, 1859. He was the first man to die in Heber, and the first to be buried in the Heber cemetery. His wife Elizabeth was left with five children, the oldest being eleven years old and the youngest six months of age. The youngest died about a year old.
