He married Catherine Fewkes on 30 June 1845, in Whitwick, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. He died on 2 March 1915, in Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States, at the age of 88, and was buried in Heber City Cemetery.

His wife Catherine Fewkes was born on 16 March 1825, in Leicester, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom, her father, Benjamin Fewkes Sr., was 38 and her mother, Ann Toone, was 46. She married Thomas Hicken on 30 June 1845, in Whitwick, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom. She died on 18 May 1879, in Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States, at the age of 54, and was buried in Heber City Cemetery, Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States.

 In 1862, as polygamy was being practiced Thomas married Jane Maitland Clotworthy (above) as a plural wife on 18 July 1863. She was a recent widow with four children who also lived in the Heber Fort adjacent to the home of Thomas and Catherine. Her husband had died three years previously and she, like other widows, was hard pressed to provide for her children. Out of the kindness of his heart Thomas married her to help her and her children. As far as is known he did not live with her. The Clotworthy children had a great respect for Thomas and is wife Catherine and the Hicken children respected the Clotworthy family. She was born on 1 August 1819, in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, her father, John Maitland, was 42 and her mother, Janet Anderson, was 24. She married Hugh Clotworthy on 6 November 1845, in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. She died on 7 September 1891, in Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States, at the age of 72, and was buried in Heber City Cemetery, Heber City, Wasatch, Utah, United States.

Thomas married Margaret Powell (above) on 15 August 1865, in Endowment House, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States as a plural wife. She was born on 8 March 1847, in Tipton, Staffordshire, England, United Kingdom, her father, George Powell, was 32 and her mother, Maria E. Mousley, was 27. They were the parents of at 1 son and 4 daughters. She immigrated to Utah, United States in 1864. She died on 18 June 1925, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States, at the age of 78, and was buried in Heber City Cemetery, Heber City., She came to Utah in 1864 with her parents on the ship general McClelland. They crossed the plains in Captain Joseph Rollin’s train. Walking all the way and arrived in Heber City on October 4, 1864. She was an active Church worker of great faith and had a strong testimony of the gospel. She helped with the sick and those in distress as well as caring for the dead. For 12 years she was president of the Heber Second Ward Primary and was an accomplished seamstress, making beautiful wedding dresses, hats, and bonnets.

Thomas’s Mother Ann Ward passed when he was only four years old. He lived with his aunt Elizabeth Hicking Cumberland while his father served in the British Army. His father was Grenadier Soldier in the British Army for about 20 years. His father fought in the Battle of Waterloo and was awarded a silver and a gold medal for meritorious service. At the age of 15 Thomas was shown in the census as a “stocking spinner.” At age 19 he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints being baptized 15 February 1845 by Thomas Efield and confirmed by Henry Platt. On 23 June 1845 he married Catherine Fewkes at the Parish Church Whitwick. He was ordained a Priest in the LDS church by Crandall Dunn (date uncertain) and later an Elder by Crandall Dunn in 1847.

He and his wife Catherine and three Children, Ellizabeth, Orson and Addison crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the sailing vessel Ellen in company with John Crook and Henry Chatwin, all of whom later became neighbors in Heber City.

The ship Ellen sailed under the direction of J. W. Cummins and left Liverpool on 8 January 1851 with 466 Saints aboard. Due to an accident the ship had to put in at North Wales for repairs, where they remained eighteen days. The ship and passengers finally arrived in New Orleans on March 14, 1851. From New Orleans they traveled up the Mississippi River to Kanesville, Now Council Bluffs, Iowa where he worked various jobs to earn money for the trip to Utah. In the spring of 1852, he and Marshall kinsman teamed together to help each other. Ther purchased oxen cows and a wagon with which to cross the plains. They joined the Eli B. Kelsey Company and made the journey to Utah without any very serious troubles.

The Hicken family reached Provo Utah in the fall of 1852. Thomas bult two houses. Their fourth Child, Thomas was born in the first house on December 19, 1952, he told his children that “he was born in a wattle” house, one made by thrusting willows side-by-side in the ground and plastering them with mud.

While in Provo he served in Captain Thomas regiment during the Walder War and in Captain Todd’s regiment in the Black Hawk War. He was ordained as a seventy in Provo in 1955 by Henry Rogers. While in Provo Catherine bora a Fifth Child Benjamin, who died a year later. Their sixth child John was also born in Provo.

The family moved to Heber City in the Spring of 1860. Orson was eleven years old and helped clear the ground for cultivating. He went with his father to the nearby streams to obtain cottonwood logs to build a cabin for their first home. After a few years they settled in the new town site on one-half of a city block. The Thomas Moulton family lived on the other half and Addison later married one of the Moulton girls.

In August 1861 Catherine’s last child David was born. On August 19, 1861, Thomas was ordained a high Priest by Elisha Averett, Sr. In 1863 he was called as a special missionary to be an advocate of the Word of Wisdom and served several short missions to Summit and Morgan Counties. He was a diligent church worker and held many church and civic offices. He was presiding teacher for eight years.

On November 7, 1880, he was ordained as a patriarch by Daniel H. Wells and John Henry Smith. His personal record noted that he had given 466 blessing and was called upon to speak at almost every Stake Conference. In 1884 he became the first counselor in the presidency of the Wasatch high Priest Quorum and served in this office for 31 years.

Thomas and his family were farmers and raised flax and with the help of his wife prepared it for spinning and furnished thread for all the community and clothing for his children. His wife Catherine was a very good seamstress and taught her daughter. Together they made men’s suits, dresses, hats and shoes.

In February 1915, Thomas Hicken fell and injured his hip, contracted pneumonia and died March 2, 1915, at the age of 88.
