The Heber Fort family of this week is that of John Murray Murdoch (Murdock) KWNX-KWL and his wives Ann Steele KWNX-KWG and Isabella Crawford KWNJ-NP. On the Heber Fort Map, the John Murdock cabin is depicted as being located near the South West corner between the Porter Dawdell and Thomas Todd Cabins. Please note that on this map, the name provided is that of “John Murdock.” Based on the review of records in Family Search, John Murdock appears to be identical to John Murray Murdoch. On page 26 in the book “How Beautiful Upon the Mountains is information about the County organization created on or about February 22, 1862. This lists John M Murdoch as the Surveyor for the county along with his Heber Fort neighbor Thomas Todd as a Selectman. Thomas Todd, was a close friend of John Murry Murdoch in Scotland and was involved in his conversion process. Both families immigrated to Utah and become neighbors in the Heber Fort. Based on the above information it is believed that John Murray Murdoch, John M Murdoch, and John Murdock are all references to the same individual.

John Murray Murdoch and his wife Ann Steele were baptized on November 20, 1850, by Thomas Hittley in Scotland. It was about this time that the Perpetual Immigration Fund was started allowing converts without the means to immigrate. President Franklin D. Richards President, then President of the British Mission was asked to find two Scotch sheepherders and their dogs to go to Utah and herd sheep. John Murray Murdoch and his family were asked to be one of these two sheep herders. John Murdoch started herding sheep in Scotland when he was 11 years old and continued to herd sheep until he was about 20 years old. He then then went into the mines in Scotland. On 24 February 1848 he married Ann Steele and went to Kinkconnel where her parents lived on a small farm where he continued to work in the mines. Thomas Todd and his wife as well as his brother-in-law James Steele were both involved in the introduction of the Gospel to John Murray Murdock.
Responding to the call for sheep herders being needed in Utah on December 31, 1851, John and his family left Scotland. The family traveled from Scotland to Liverpool England by steamship, Liverpool to New Orleans by ship, then up the Mississippi River to St. Louis. Here they lost both their daughter Elizabeth and son James due to illness and lack of food. They then continued on the Missouri River to Kansas City, Kansas. It was here on May 20th, 1852, in a tent, during a terrific thunderstorm, that Mary Murray Murdock was born. After they were outfitted for the overland travel to Utah, they arrived in Salt Lake City on September 3, 1852. Shortly after their arrival in Salt Lake, they learned there were no sheep to be herded as most of the sheep had been lost over the prior winter. They were
employed in Farmington and in Salt Lake City where they lived in the Salt Lake City Third Ward. In the fall of 1857 John was made a Captain in Utah group that went to Echo Canyon to prevent Johnson’s Army from making it to Utah that year. The following year he and his family loaded up their belongings and moved temporarily to Goshen, Utah. They spent the summer there and, in the fall, returned to Salt Lake after Johnson’s Army had passed through. They lived in Salt Lake until the Spring of 1860 when they moved to the Provo Valley (Heber) where they learned that land could be bought by paying the surveyors fees. He and his family moved into the Heber Fort and lived in a dugout near the Todd family. John Murray Murdoch and his wives and descendants played a critical role in Wasatch County becoming a major sheep ranching industry. The memories preserved about this family are exactly what I hope each of us can leave for our families. He and his family live on through their descendants and the preserved memories. If you have time please look at his memories in FamilySearch. Below is a link to one such story with many more details than have been provided above.
