David sands zufelt: a midway fort family
The Heber Valley Heritage Foundation Midway Fort Family of the week is that of D. Zufelt who is believed to be identical to David Sands Zufelt LLQ6-4J4. Researched by Jason Moulton. His cabin was located on the East side of the Midway Fort sandwiched between the cabins of Jesse McCartell and James Gurr. It could not be definitely determined how long he lived in the Midway Fort and or who lived with him.
In an attempt to ensure the information identifying D. Zufelt as David Sands Zufelt is accurate, the following was sent to relative of David Sands Zufelt. “We are currently trying to identify and write up histories on each of the families in the Midway Utah Fort. On the diagram is listed a cabin with the name D Zufelt. I am attempting to determine if this is possibly identical to David Sands Zufelt. LLQ6-4J4 in family search. I noticed you have done some recent research on him. As best we can determine the Midway Fort would have been 1866-1868 and possibly longer. On the fort diagram, it shows D Zufelt and in a narrative listing, it shows David Zufelt. Do you know anything that would confirm him living in the Midway Fort?”
In response, I received the following information “ Yes, the cabin was that of David Sands Zufelt. I have heard many stories of him, he married Mamie Louise Dalton (believed to be Mamie Louisa Dayton KWJ6-SS1) while in Midway, Utah, …The marriage did not last long and he then married Phoebe Ann Chilton. They had 9 children, …they lived in Arizona as this is where he had settled after leaving Midway, Utah.”
David Sands Zufelt LLQ6-4J4 was born on 14 January 1845, in Blackberry Township, Kane, Illinois, United States, his father, Henry Zufelt, was 35 and his mother, Julia Ann Dillabaugh, was 27. He married Phoebe Ann Chilton on 6 February 1870. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters. He lived in Pottawattamie, Iowa, United States in 1850 and Payson, Utah, Utah, United States in 1860. He died on 20 September 1898, in Roswell, Chaves, New Mexico, United States, at the age of 53, and was buried in Roswell, Chaves, New Mexico, United States.
David Sands Zufelt at the age of 7 is believed to have traveled to Utah with his parents in the 21st company with Allen Weeks being listed as Captain arriving in Salt Lake City on or about 18 September 1852.
It appears that Henry Zufelt, the father of David Sands Zufelt immigrated to Utah on or about 18 September 1852. From the timeline provided in his Fathers Family Search file, is the following , on 12 October 1852 the Zufelt’s and their three other children, moved southwest to Cedar Valley, Utah County, Utah because it abounded in “fine land, timber, and grass.” In 1864, Davids parents are living in Payson, Utah where they resided until moving to Glenwood , Sevier County Utah where his father passed away in 1887. It is noted David Sands Zufelt and his wife Phoebe Ann Chilton had children born in Sevier County starting in 1871. .
The following was found in the Book How Beautiful Upon the Mountains page 688. “David Sands Zufelt, son of Henry Zufelt and Julia Ann Dillsbough was born January 14, 1845, at Blacksburg, Kane County, Illinois. He married Louisa Dayton.(Mamie Louisa Dayton KWJ6-SS1). On February 6, 1871, he married Phoebe Anne Chilton, the daughter of Isaac Jay Chilton and Phoebe Brice Montalgo. She was born December 8th, 1853. They were married in the Manti Temple. Mrs. Zufelt died April 30th, 1923, at Safford, Graham County, Arizona.

She was born on 19 February 1853, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States, her father, Hyrum Dayton, was 54 and her mother, Sophia Lance, was 27. She married Enoch William Davis about 1867, in Utah, United States. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 3 daughters. She died on 5 June 1892, in Vernal, Uintah, Utah, United States, at the age of 39, and was buried in Vernal, Uintah, Utah, United States.
In a tragic chain of events, Mamie Louisa Dayton was killed by her husband in Vernal, Utah. Her husband was subsequently convicted of the murder of his wife and was later executed for this crime near the point of the Mountain in Utah.
Phoebe Ann Chilton LLQF-HP6 was born on 18 December 1852, in Brynmawr, Breconshire, Wales, United Kingdom, her father, Isaac Chilton, was 21 and her mother, Ann Watkins, was 21. She married David Sands Zufelt on 6 February 1870. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters. She lived in Douglas, Nebraska, United States in 1860. She died on 30 April 1923, in Safford, Graham, Arizona, United States, at the age of 70, and was buried in Safford Cemetery, Safford, Graham, Arizona, United States. The following children were born to this marriage.
The first five of these children were born in Sevier County, Utah starting in 1871. Richard Lorenzo was born in Thatcher, Arizona in January 1883. Emma Cleo and their last child was born in Safford, Arizona starting in 1890.
Records of the Bureau of Land Management were searched for the name David Sands Zufelt and the following was located as having homesteaded property near Safford, Arizona. He is listed as having homesteaded 80 Acres depicted in the dark orange color.
